Relationships are hard for Brantley. Because of his nonverbal nature, many people dismiss the possibility of forming a genuine connection with my energetic, blonde-haired son. While numerous people lend him a minute or two of interaction, it generally doesn’t progress beyond those initial moments.

The impact of this struck me deeply when I observed Brantley’s reaction to the realization that a woman we know would soon be delivering a child. It brought forth a flood of emotion from Brantley which prompted the deepest appreciation from me for the relationship she has built with my son.

As parents, our common desire is for our children to experience joy and receive kindness from others.  What Brantley desires is simple—he seeks people to engage with him, offer unconditional love, rub his feet, and indulge in endless tickles. Breaking the barriers of verbal communication to form this bond with Brantley requires someone willing to invest time and effort in understanding his nonverbal cues, gestures, and expressions.

Only a select few have successfully transcended these communication constraints, establishing a special bond with my affectionate and lovable son. Those who have nurtured these connections have undoubtedly enriched Brantley’s already joyful demeanor, earning a cherished place not only in my heart but also in Brantley’s.
