Imagine having a child who is a danger to themselves, a child who truly can’t help their impulses to eat everything, to feel everything.

One big worry has always been our kitchen. Every time I try to cook, it becomes a battle—not just for a meal, but for Brantley’s safety.

He grabs knives.

He eats raw meat.

He licks the stove burners.

He puts his hand down the toaster.

Each incident makes my heart stop.

My kitchen has become a zone of constant worry. I’m always on edge, watching Brantley closely, anticipating the next dangerous move.

He is impulsive and fast with no sense of danger. Which is a terrifying combination.

But today, for the first time in a long time, I felt something I haven’t in a while—hope.

I met with a company that specializes in accommodations for families like ours, and they might be able to help address some of these issues. We’re exploring ways to make the kitchen safer and more manageable so that I can cook again, without the constant fear that Brantley will hurt himself.

I know it’s not a magic solution, but just knowing there’s a possibility of reclaiming a calmness to our home brings a bit of relief. #autismfamily #autismlife #autismparents #specialneedsparenting #specialneedsmom
